This morning we left from Nairobi and headed towards Tharaka Nithi where we will visit the first WUA. On our way, after three hours of driving, we visited two sites of Embu Water and Sanitation Company EWASCO which is an example of a well performing urban water utility.
We got to know to their decentralized wastewater treatment facility which is still under construction but already working, collecting wastewater from 800 connections.
Our second site was a water kiosk, a kiosk selling water by volume to for example people with no household connection. These water kiosks are common in Kenya and they also sell other goods like soap and snacks.
This visit to EWASCO gave us a benchmark of a well-functioning Kenyan water utility to think about when doing our project. After the visit we drove to town of Chucka in Tharaka Nithi and started to prepare ourselves for the next day which is going to be the first one in the WUAs!
